The Institutionalization of Research in Colombia: A Historical Review of a National and Regional Concept of University

This book shows the process whereby universities in Colombia instituted research as one of its core functions based on the experience of the Universidad Cooperativa de Colombia in its effort to adjust to other universities’ dynamics in the context of a global modernity promoted by the State. Ideological, administrative, financial, and social transformations in such context produced the universities’ redirection of traditions to adapt to new circumstances. Professors had to combine their teaching activities with the design and implementation of scientific research projects that, while in principle involved a cultural shock, resulted in the building of their professional competence, teamwork skills, and effectiveness to show the results of their work and achieve the goals of social uses of knowledge. The organizational and cultural change shows a differentiation among institutions, regions, and academic programs that makes it complex to build the concept and practice of university in Colombia.
