Mechanisms for an effective contribution of European integration to Latin American integration

Mechanisms for an Effective Contribution of European Integration to Latin American Integration brings together eight chapters that examine the integration processes of Latin America and the Caribbean (LAC) and the European Union (EU), as well as the possibilities for strengthening cooperation between the two regions in response to the economic, political, environmental, and geopolitical transformations of the contemporary international context.

The volume is organized into three parts. The first focuses on the integration process in Latin America and the Caribbean and addresses the challenges of productive development, innovation, and the region’s international positioning. It examines the productive development model promoted by ECLAC, with an emphasis on science, technology and innovation, digital transformation, entrepreneurship, technological extension services, and human capital development. It also analyzes the evolution of Mercosur and its relations with the European Union and ASEAN in a context of increasing multipolarity and the reconfiguration of international economic relations.

The second part focuses on European integration and some of the tensions currently facing the EU. It examines the rise of nationalist Euroscepticism in Italy and the role of Fratelli d’Italia, as well as the consequences and lessons of Brexit for the European project. These analyses provide an opportunity to explore the political, economic, and institutional challenges involved in maintaining and deepening regional integration.

The third part examines opportunities for cooperation between the EU and LAC in strategic areas for development and integration. The chapters address competitiveness, SMEs, scientific and academic cooperation, higher education, the ecological transition, and geopolitical relations. Particular attention is given to the potential of cooperation in science, technology, and higher education to strengthen regional capacities and advance new forms of collaboration between the two regions.

The volume also examines the transformation of transatlantic relations during Donald Trump’s second administration and its implications for European strategic autonomy and relations with Latin America. From a comparative and multidimensional perspective, the book brings together integration, productive development, knowledge, sustainability, and geopolitics, providing elements for understanding current challenges to regional integration and exploring new agendas for cooperation between the European Union and Latin America and the Caribbean.
