Sustainable Trade, Migration, and Transatlantic Linkages in Latin American Regional Integration

The core objective of volume 26 of the Gridale collection is to examine, from a comparative and multidisciplinary perspective, how Latin American regional integration can be reoriented in an international environment marked by overlapping crises, geopolitical reconfiguration, more demanding environmental agendas, and mounting migratory pressures. Drawing on the cases of the interregional relationship between the European Union and Latin America, the Andean Community, Mercosur, and the Pacific Alliance, the book analyzes the extent to which sustainable trade, multilevel governance, and human mobility can become levers for more inclusive and sustainable development in the region. Along a first axis, the chapters on transatlantic relations and environmental regulation show how the European Green Deal and new non-tariff measures strain biregional ties, but also open up space to renegotiate asymmetries, diversify alliances, and build shared agendas on climate, inequality, and economic security. A second axis focuses on the internal challenges of integration by examining the performance of the Pacific Alliance in relation to the 2030 Agenda and the role of subnational governments’ paradiplomacy in the reconfiguration of regional governance. The third axis addresses hemispheric reconfiguration through the lens of U. S. migration policy, the strategic role of remittances in regional value chains, and migrants’ struggles for the recognition of their rights in terms of cosmopolitan law. Taken together, volume 26 calls for rethinking Latin American integration not only as a normative commitment, but as an operational instrument for articulating trade, sustainable development, and rights protection, thereby strengthening transatlantic ties and regional resilience.
