Utilization of fish farming by-products for industry: innovations in transformation and added value

Tilapia aquaculture byproducts represent an opportunity to generate value-added goods beyond the food chain. In this project, protocols were developed and standardized for the production of non-edible products from these byproducts, including collagen, body lotion, body soap, and organic fertilizer. These products were designed according to quality criteria and good manufacturing practices, demonstrating their viability in sectors such as cosmetics and agriculture. Microbiological and quality analyses confirmed compliance with established parameters, ensuring safety of use.
In light of this, there is a need to promote alternatives that not only transform waste into useful products but also integrate the principles of sustainability and the circular economy into aquaculture. The production of goods such as creams, soaps, fertilizers, and collagen not only diversifies the uses of tilapia but also opens the possibility of creating complementary production chains capable of revitalizing local and rural economies. Likewise, these initiatives reduce the environmental pressure resulting from the improper disposal of byproducts, fostering the comprehensive use of biomass and promoting the development of innovative bioproducts that strengthen the competitiveness and sustainability of aquaculture in Colombia.
