Basic teaching of written Spanish for deaf people

This textbook is a teaching material designed to support the basic teaching-learning process of written Spanish as a second language for people with hearing impairments. It is intended for use by students and teachers through a variety of content, examples, exercises, and activities that facilitate the understanding and application of the topics. This textbook was created as a result of a pedagogical exercise with hearing-impaired students at a district school in Bogotá, Colombia. Various aspects of the curriculum and teaching methodology were adopted, with certain flexibilities and adaptations, to ensure that the written content is more appropriate for the cognitive style of this population group. Its content and methodology are designed with visual support through images, explanations that progress according to the lesson's difficulty level, and various exercises and activities presented in a pleasant and simple manner. The main objective is to help bilingual teachers or Spanish teachers, assisted by an interpreter and supported by a linguistic model, more easily assist students in relating written material to its references. This book is designed for classroom use through Colombian Sign Language. Each unit is presented with a title that organizes the initial reading, vocabulary, the most important grammatical aspects, practical activities, and supplementary readings. This book is also linked to a common thread that guides deaf students toward advancing and deepening their knowledge of their surroundings, enabling them to understand not only the essential workings of the language but also everything inherent to their everyday social and cultural environment. This makes this textbook also a process of immersion, access, and appropriation of the city that favors the exercise of the rights of people with hearing disabilities.
