The information provided by the Ministerio de Educación Nacional de Colombia shows a growing number of professionals in Veterinary Medicine and Zootechnics in Colombia; however, studies on the subject have conducted fragmented analyses of the situation. The impact of the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020 generated new dynamics in academic and professional activities, prompting the Colombian Association of Faculties of Veterinary Medicine and Zootechnics (ASFAMEVEZ) to conduct a national study to better understand the educational and labor dynamics in these fields. The aim of the study was to characterize the state, evolution, and influencing factors in the professional practice and well-being of these professionals. This research was carried out using a descriptive cross-sectional methodology, which included three structured surveys directed at students, graduates, and employers, obtaining 2179 responses between January and May 2023. The study was approved by the Ethics Committee of Universidad de La Salle.

The results reveal the reality of these professions in Colombia, highlighting the increase in the number of female professionals in Veterinary Medicine and Zootechnics. Additionally, although perceptions are mostly positive, there is a latent concern for the socio-emotional dimension of the practice. In general, the importance of these disciplines for various sectors is recognized, and it is identified that postgraduate studies are key to improving socioeconomic conditions and professional competencies. It is also evident that labor condition trends are similar across professions, being moderate overall but potentially concerning in some cases, especially given the growing competition from other disciplines. Despite the identified challenges, a promising future is envisaged for these professions in Colombia, despite the variable impact of the pandemic on students.
