Conical pain in the elderly: Professional competencies for its care

It has been found that worldwide (including Colombia) limitations in professional skills for the approach to pain in the elderly predominate. This research book aims to share the experiences and results of the research project "Design and piloting of an online course to empower health professionals in pain care for the elderly in Santa Marta, Colombia", carried out in collaboration with the Universidad del Norte and the Universidad Central de Chile, which was funded by the Initiative of the International Association for the Study of Pain (IASP) to support pain education in developing countries.
The book describes the process of designing and evaluating the potential of an online course, valid for our culture, based on the characterization of the barriers and opportunities for quality care for older people with pain in our environment. To identify these barriers, as well as to select the best strategies and content for the design of the online course, quantitative and qualitative strategies were combined, including systematic reviews of the literature that addressed issues related to stereotypes about old age, the pedagogical design of courses virtual, basic skills for pain care and interprofessional education.
It contains more than 100 references, of which more than half are from 2021 and 2022. The work is organized into 7 chapters, divided into two parts: the first deals with the first phase of the project whose purpose was to characterize barriers and opportunities to improve the quality of care and implement training processes, which concluded with the design and development of the online course (4 chapters). The second part is dedicated to describing the piloting of the course, in which its acceptability, feasibility, quality, and short-term impact on competencies were evaluated (3 chapters). The Annexes offer complementary information on the process, the instruments used and the visual identity manual of the online course.
