Facing the Future of Latin American Integration

Latin American governments and academics need to discuss several central themes that affect the future of regional integration in the 21st century, such as how to overcome the political-ideological polarization of the region, establish links with other regional agreements, contribute together to global governance, and define an institutional framework starting from different development models. The authors of this volume discuss all these topics in seven chapters as a result of their studies presented at the II International Congress of the Grupo de Reflexión sobre Integración y Desarrollo en América Latina y Europa (Gridale) in Buenos Aires, Argentina (March 2021). They also make proposals, starting from different theoretical perspectives, integration agreements, and national and subregional realities. The general approach to the current stagnation of regional integration requires a thorough, critical, and broad discussion of these issues. Ignoring them does not seem to have yielded positive results, nor have efforts to transfer models and theoretical proposals from other societies to our continent that, as they do not have continuity in their applications and find themselves in polarized and different environments, have not achieved consensus. Will the thought processes of the third decade of the 21st century finally define a Latin American integration process that manages to simultaneously overcome different obstacles? There is no easy answer to that question, but this book tries to help us reflect on how to do it and calls us to look to the future with a renewed vision.
