The elderly in a situation of dependency and their family: Contributions from an interdisciplinary and Latin American perspective

Successful aging is a topic in which it is possible to find abundant literature, as well as about the health problems associated with aging, however, it is more difficult to find updated texts on the psychosocial aspects of caring for sick elderly people, and in situation of dependence. Through a critical review of the literature, tracing its historical origins and ending with the most up-to-date contributions, the cognitive and physical effects of aging, the stress of caregivers and the family needs of geriatric patients are detailed; institutionalization, family problems, dementia and family caregivers. The book revolves around three axes: the first are the determinants and manifestations of aging that are associated with limitations of autonomy and, therefore, dependence. A second conceptual axis is dependence, functionality and its determining biopsychosocial factors. The last axis corresponds to family caregivers, the effect of overload and their quality of life. This book allows the reader to obtain clear and precise information on aspects related to healthy aging, dependence and responsibilities in the care of such patients, all this to generate a reflection on the care not only of the geriatric patient, but of the family, the programs in prevention and health promotion in public and private entities for caregivers and family members.
